Our commitment to you:
- VPDWA walkers demonstrate responsible and competent handling skills
- All dogs are kept under control whether they are on or off leash
- Maximum of 8 dogs per walkers; with no more than 3 off leash at one time
- VPDWA canine members are screened and steps are taken to ensure safety for all dogs and people
- Dog walkers will pick up feces and are dedicated to maintaining cleanliness of dog use
When you see us, here is how you can help:
- If you meet a group of dogs, keep moving past
- Don't feed treats to the dog, due to possible allergies or medical conditions
- Keep your dog within your view and at a distance from our leashed dogs
- Horse and bicycle riders please slow and alert us to your presence so we may yield to you
- Please allow us to keep our attention on our dogs, especially while we're moving to and from our vehicles
- For children's safety please ask handler before approaching any dog.
The VPDWA has consulted with the UEL trail riders Association, and together have developed "safe passage" protocol for horses and dogs, which our members implement. The Alliance provides information to dog owners so that they too will know what to do when they encounter a horse with their dog.
The VPDWA has future goals of developing horse introduction programs for dogs and their owners, held in secure and safe environments. We welcome the involvement of the horse community to assist in facilitating these programs and to maintain open communication so that the programs developed accurately represent the needs of the horse/dog community. Please contact the VPDWA if you have knowledge, abilities or horses that you are interested in sharing for the purpose of the greater good.
Education is the key to a safe park community for all. The VPDWA is striving to make a difference. We encourage and appreciate all proactive involvement that helps make this a winning solution for everyone.
